Project Helix
The official codename for Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, confirmed by Gaming CEO Asha Sharma on March 5, 2026. Expected to play both Xbox and PC games.
Alpha Kit
An early pre-release version of console hardware sent to game studios for development and testing. Microsoft confirmed Project Helix alpha dev kits will ship in 2027.
Backward Compatibility
The ability of a newer console to run games originally designed for older hardware. Xbox's backward compatibility program covers select original Xbox, Xbox 360, and all Xbox One and Series X|S titles.
Dev Kit
Development kit — specialized hardware and software tools provided to game studios so they can build, test, and optimize games before a console launches commercially.
DirectSR
Microsoft's DirectX API for super-resolution upscaling. It provides a standardized interface for games to use vendor-specific upscaling technologies like AMD FSR or NVIDIA DLSS.
FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution)
AMD's spatial and temporal upscaling technology that renders frames at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs them to a higher output resolution, improving performance with minimal visual quality loss.
FSR Next / FSR Diamond
The rumored next generation of AMD's FSR upscaling technology, expected to incorporate machine-learning-based techniques. Referenced by Jason Ronald during the GDC 2026 keynote.
Game Mode
A reported operating mode for Project Helix that provides a traditional console-like gaming experience with optimized performance, similar to the current Xbox Series X|S interface.
Game Pass
Microsoft's gaming subscription service offering access to a rotating library of hundreds of games for a monthly fee. Comes in Console, PC, and Ultimate tiers.
GDC (Game Developers Conference)
The largest annual gathering of professional game developers, held in San Francisco. GDC 2026 (March 9–13) was the venue for the first official Project Helix technical presentation.
Neural Rendering
A category of AI-powered graphics techniques that use trained neural networks to generate, enhance, or denoise rendered imagery in real time. Highlighted in the GDC 2026 keynote as a target for Project Helix.
Path Tracing
A physically accurate rendering technique that traces the full path of light rays as they bounce through a scene. More computationally expensive than standard ray tracing, but produces highly realistic global illumination.
Ray Tracing
A rendering technique that simulates how light interacts with surfaces, reflections, and shadows in a 3D scene. Project Helix targets an order-of-magnitude leap in ray tracing performance over Xbox Series X.
RDNA 5
AMD's next-generation GPU architecture following RDNA 4. Widely expected to power Project Helix's graphics processor, though the exact generation depends on the final launch timeline.
SoC (System on Chip)
An integrated circuit that combines CPU, GPU, memory controller, and other components on a single chip. All modern consoles use custom SoCs — Project Helix will use a custom AMD SoC fabricated by TSMC.
Tape-Out
The final stage of chip design where the completed layout is sent to the fabrication facility (foundry) for manufacturing. Industry sources reported Project Helix's AMD chip reached tape-out at TSMC in early 2026.
TFLOPS (Teraflops)
A measure of computing performance equal to one trillion floating-point operations per second. Used to compare raw GPU throughput between consoles — Xbox Series X delivers 12 TFLOPS.
TSMC
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — the world's largest and most advanced chip foundry. TSMC manufactures custom processors for PlayStation, Xbox, Apple, AMD, and NVIDIA.
Windows Mode
A reported dual-boot mode for Project Helix that would provide access to the full Windows desktop environment, enabling compatibility with PC games, Steam, and other PC storefronts.
Xbox Mode
A feature announced for Windows 11 starting April 2026 that adds a console-like interface to PCs. Seen as a precursor to how Project Helix may bridge console and PC experiences.
Xbox Play Anywhere
A Microsoft program allowing a single digital purchase to be played on both Xbox consoles and Windows PCs with shared saves and achievements.
Zen 6
AMD's next-generation CPU architecture following Zen 5. Rumored to provide the CPU cores for Project Helix's custom SoC, offering significant IPC (instructions per clock) improvements.
